For anyone who is used to Spain or France with all the most modern conveniences then Gozo might not be for you as it feels that the island is around 10 years behind these countries around the world. Not a bad thing for anyone who is in need of a quiet serene holiday vacation. You will not find any nightlife like you may find in main land Malta we were not looking but you find areas similar to Ramla Bay Beach and Marsalform in case you are in search of something a bit more positive. We actually did have occasion to stay at one out of the hotels in Gozo which appeared appealing enough I unluckily forgot the name of it for the reason that we had been traumatised by roaches at our first villa.
You would unquestionably need an automobile (they drive on the exact same side as the UK) if you are staying on Gozo unless you are fine with riding on bus services. The buses are real antiques from the 50s and they are remarkably ornamented.
We hired a villa in Gozo, near the village of Xaghra which was quiet, pretty much like the rest of the island apart from the capital Victoria. The Citadel in Victoria is well worth a visit. Gozo being predominantly catholic has churches that are lavishly decorated and most of the churches are lit at night. You will find some interesting museums to visit as well some displaying the huge wealth of the Catholic Church in solid silver.
For those who have some spare cash, the two excursions that I would suggest are the Seaplane that will take you on a scenic flight around the islands and leave you in Malta for the day. Be prepared to jostle for a window seat to be able to see the spectacular coast line. The plane flies pretty low so you can see a lot of detail.
The next excursion is to hire a boat for the day. We paid out the extra and had the boat to ourselves which is great as the captain will take you where you wish to go, we were provided with coffee as well as afternoon tea and cooked fresh lunch of fish that has been caught that morning. We stopped off at numerous bays and swam with the fish. This was a marvelous experience. The captain told us to jump in the water with our snorkels and then he fed the fish. We had countless fish all swimming around us much like a huge aquarium.
